Someone that owed me money died, how do I get it now?

This person that usually makes alot of money was in debt. I lent him 1800 to get out of debt, a mistake cause he dragged his *** paying me back. Anyway, he was hit by a car and died owing me that $1800. Someone said I could go to the courthouse and file something that asks that court to pay me back from any taxes or property he might have coming to him. That I did need witnesses too. Does anyone know how I could get money owed to me from a dead person?
